Pacific Palisades Wildfires Rapidly Blaze as IAEP Members Work Relentlessly to Keep Communities Safe

The Los Angeles Fire Department and other area firefighting agencies have been working tirelessly around the clock to battle the blazes. In this tragedy, members of the IAEP, along with other public safety professionals, have played a tremendous role in delivering essential support and aid. EMS teams continue to work in the extreme conditions to rescue and evacuate residents, while also delivering medical support to those affected by the hazardous air quality, burns, and more.

Paramedics have been in constant motion, assisting not only the affected victims but also coordinating with other first responders to facilitate rapid evacuations from the most impacted areas. IAEP members of both Falck Ambulance and McCormack Ambulance are working side-by-side to render aid to the community. IAEP members, who also work as National representatives, Jack Yandell and Andy Gonzalez, have been crucial to the IAEP amidst this destruction.

Since January 7th, the Pacific Palisades of Los Angeles and the surrounding areas have been battling a wave of devastating wildfires, which initially began as a brush fire but has spiraled into the most destructive fire in Los Angeles’ history. The fire has been fueled by consistent powerful winds, and dry air. It has grown to be the largest wildfire in the region, thus far burning more than 17,000 acres of land occupied with homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Tragically, an estimated 1,000 structures have already been lost, including a McCormick Ambulance station, with the threat of many more being affected. At least ten people have been killed, and nearly 200,000 evacuation orders have been set with residents fleeing their homes in the face of the advancing flames.

The air quality in the region has worsened significantly, with dense smoke filling the skies. This has led to highly hazardous conditions especially for vulnerable individuals such as children, elders, and those with respiratory conditions. As the thick smoke continues to spread, officials continue to urge people to stay indoors and to use protective masks when necessary.

While the impact of this crisis is immense, the teamwork of first responders- firefighters, EMS, law enforcement- has been relentless. Despite the hazards, the dedication of those working to contain the fires and protect lives has been nothing short of heroic. Their courage and determination are essential in this ongoing battle against the flames.

Although the road ahead remains unclear, the hope for recovery and rebuilding grows stronger each day. The tireless efforts of all on the front lines offers a glare of hope amid all destruction. These heroes, from EMS to firefighters and law enforcement officers, continue to ensure that the people of Los Angeles remain protected despite the ongoing crisis.

Union Local Tax Issues

Federal law now requires that every local union file an annual information return—Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N—with the IRS.

If your local fails to file under this new requirement, your local will lose its tax-exempt status.
