IAEP Locals in California Mourn Loss of San Diego Paramedic
April 2, 2010
IAEP locals in California are mourning the loss of fellow EMS professional Esteban Bahena who worked as an EMT for San Diego Medical Services. Bahena was killed yesterday after being hit by a car while responding to an auto-accident on Route 163 in San Diego.
Bahena and his partner had stopped on the highway to assist a stranded motorist when an accident occurred on the same stretch of highway. Bahena had begun setting up road flairs to alert on coming drivers when he was struck by a vehicle. Bahena was transported to Mercy Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bahena family and all of his coworkers and friends,” said IAEP National Representative Mike Penna. “A tragic incident like this is a clear reminder of the dangers of our profession and the risks we take every day as EMS professionals.”
The IAEP extends condolences to the Bahena family and his fellow EMS professionals at San Diego Medical Services. Information has not yet been released regarding a memorial service for Bahena, but IAEP members in California have begun collecting donations in his memory.
