IAEP Members in Florida Defeat Cuts to Public Retirement System

May 12, 2010

IAEP members in Florida recently worked with their fellow public employees to defeat a number of bills designed to make significant cuts to the state retirement system (FRS).

“The defeat of these measures is a testament to the solidarity of our members,” said IAEP Director of Organizing Bryan Hamrick. “By joining together with our brothers and sisters to voice our opposition, we were able to avoid drastic cuts to FRS that would have harmed public employees at all stages of their careers.”

Throughout April, IAEP members fought Florida State Senate Bills 1902 and 2022, which would have made drastic changes the current retirement system for all of the state’s public employees.  The bills included a new mandate for employee contributions to the retirement plan and changes to the way retirement compensation is currently calculated.

“We must remain unified and continue to monitor the legislation for any additional attacks on FRS and public employees,” said Hamrick. “Through our unity we will continue to voice our concerns throughout the future.”

The IAEP thanks everyone involved for their outspoken opposition to the proposed cuts to the FRS.
