When he isn't saving lives as a paramedic with AMR of Santa Barbara, California, Coy Briscoe is busy helping his fellow EMS professionals as the president of IAEP Local 70. Coy has been in EMS for the past 16 years and has constantly worked to strengthen his union since he and his fellow EMS professionals formed the local in 1999.
Elected president in 2008, Coy has focused on bringing stronger unity to his local as well as showing just how important union membership can be for all of his coworkers.
"When I first took office getting the local organized was my largest challenge," said Coy. "There wasn't a lot of communication between members and it was preventing us from becoming a stronger community."
Coy began utilizing union meetings to promote this community feeling and to ensure his fellow members he was there to help.
"In the past there was a feeling that the president was doing things to help himself," said Coy. "I've never been about me, and things have been working well since I was elected."
Coy has overseen a resurgence of interest in the union through events such as union meetings and employee barbecues, and is working diligently to further strengthen his local for future negotiations.
"Most importantly I am working to get our local to a place where we can make it through negotiations without compromising our values," said Coy. "That way we successfully protect what we already have and keep things running smoothly."
