Starting March 22, 2009, Massachusetts became the 45th state in the nation with a law requiring motorists to slow down or move over a lane when approaching emergency vehicles stopped in the highway.
The law requires drivers who approach a stationary emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights police cruisers, ambulances and EMS vehicles, and Massachusetts Highway Department vehicles to slow down to a reasonable and safe speed. Drivers must also move over to the next lane if they can do so safely. Violating the law could cost you $100 in fines.
"Implementing this law is a step toward making things safer for EMS, police, and firefighters who are responding to accidents and other emergencies," said IAEP National Director Matthew Levy. "It adds another layer of protection for these highly-skilled professionals."
